What if...

...NZ had a President. Who would you vote for? It doesn't seem fair that we just get to vote for a party, when we could also have the excitement of a Presidential election! Now so this doesn't turn into a party-based vote, I want you to vote for the current party leader that you'd love to have as the "head of state" regardless of the party that might hold sway in the legislature. Just vote to your right!

That's a tough one.

There are people in the wings of the Labour party I would pick... and I've never voted for Labour so it's not just a party thing.

hmmmmm... will have to think about that.

I'm not from NZ and don't have a clue who any of those people are. But I went ahead and voted anyway because "our troops died to provide that right." Um, ok, maybe not.

I voted for Winston Peters because his last name is PETERS and that makes me giggle whenever I say it out loud. Winston Peters. Hee, hee. See what I mean?!

What became of Richard Prebble? Is Act still around...?

Rodney Hide is the ACT leader. Richard Prebble resigned from the leadership in 2004 is now a Company Director (Mainfreight) and Consultant. He continues to write books and so forth. I'm sure he does OK. Not sure if he retains ACT party membership or anything?

Helen Clark enters the race with 1 day to go! Is it just Frank finally making up his mind to go with Helen? Or is this a genuine Obama-esque groundswell that will carry her to a glorious Presidential victory! Not to worry if it doesn't, she's been warming her UN seat up for some time...

I vote Phil Goff. There is just a great "statesman like" presence about him. What about an outsider such as Meng Foon? He is the Mayor of Gisborne and by all accounts a smart cookie (we definately are missing those in the Beehive). If I was to choose someone who wasnt currently in politics but would make a great leader, that hands down would be Sir Richard Hadlee! Bring back Paddles i say!!

So John Key is our new President! He'll likely be our new PM so we'll get a chance to see how that works out for y'all... I was interested to see that Helen Clark got 1 vote and that Pita Sharples was the main challenger - perhaps he has some statesman like qualities that would be valued in this role. Perhpas also an indication that for all Helen Clark's gifts, she has lost touch with the electorate, and has become hell-bent on creating the civic society in her own image.
